The first race of the season for KDBA got underway on the weekend of June 2nd and 3rd, 2007.  The weather was good and the racing was even better.

This race was dedicated to a very good friend to a lot of us and a very good racer, Lloyd Burns.  As most of you may already know, Lloyd had a boating accident on April 21, 2007 in Pisgah Bay and later that day died.  This race was in his memory and his presence was missed by everyone that had raced with him in this bay.

Our prayers are still with Carol and his family.

We want to welcome all of the new racers that traveled from far and wide to come and race with us.  There were about 38 registered racers in the classes from Pro Eliminator down to River Racer I.  Jeff Miller and Jim Dunn were there testing their Pro Mod.   John Haas was also with them tuning on the motor.  Their runs were great and the crowd seemed to really like to see the fast boat speed down the track.

KDBA had decided to do their races a little different this year.  The entry fee for the Pro Mod’s down to the Stock Eliminator class was $ 300.  They put $ 200 of that money back into the purse.  The Modified Eliminator class had the most racers with a total of 16 boats.  The Top Eliminator class was the next class with the most boats.

The Top Eliminator class had a racer that caught the eye of a lot of the spectators out on the water.  It was like she had her own fan club.  Ashly Ruf, from St. Charles , MO , came down to race and she did just that!  Ashly was the top qualifier in her class with 9.008 @ 106 MPH.  She cut a .156 light.

Let’s move on the results of all the classes starting with the River Racer class that had two boats.

 River Racer I

Suzy Shepherd driving her STV ran a 12.186 with a .966 light to take the win over new comer, Bubba Broyles, Jr., Bubba ran a 12.659 with a .407 light.  Good job on both racers!

 Stock Eliminator

The top qualifier in the stock eliminator was Brian Jackson of Elsberry , MO in Floodrunner, but that didn’t last long.  Jackson had trouble with his motor and he had to declare broke and would be unable to race on Sunday.  Joey Bishop was also running great until he had trouble with his motor and also had to declare broke.

The top qualifier was a new racer from Glen Allen, VA. , Phil Broyles, Sr...  Phil had to face Michael Gladney in Voodoo Canoe on the first run for the Stock Eliminator class.  Broyles, Sr.  ran to fast for the class with a 10.597 on a .311 light giving the win to Michael Gladney, who also ran to fast for the class with a 10.967 on a .665 light.

Sam Schultz, driving Krazy Kracker, ran an 11.244 with a .283 light @ 83.5 MPH but Brad Murphy ran an 11.129 @ 98.7 MPH on a .367 light to take the win.

The final round had Murphy, driving Murphy’s Law, facing Gladney, driving Voodoo Canoe.  Voodoo Canoe came out first at the light with a .009 and went on to run an 11.009 @ 84 MPH to take the win over Murphy’s slower light of a .243 and an 11.186 ET @ 96 MPH.  Brad was trying to catch Gladney but he left him at the light!    Michael Gladney won around $ 800 and Brad Murphy won around $ 200.

 Modified Eliminator

This was the top dog class, where all the money was!!  Dan Roak and Barry Salsman both ran a 10.00 and the computer had to take the time out another digit to determine who was top qualifier.  Dan Roak had the better time by a hair giving him the number one spot and Barry Salsman taking the number two spot.

Dan Roak ran a 12.189 @ 68 MPH on a bye run.  Shane Stafford, of Pontotoc, MS, driving Flat Nasty, ran a 10.681 on a .230 light @ 97 MPH to take the win over Wade Wallace of Benton, KY driving Rush.  Wallace had a better ET of 10.084 but he had a 2.277 light.

Kurt Siewert, driving Dazed and Confused, had a .627 light on a 9.977 ET.  He was to fast for the class but Phillip Gray had a -.050 red light and a 10.340 ET giving the win to Kurt Siewert.

Bob Lipton, of St Charles, MO, driving Moisture Missle, ran a 10.594 on a .254 light against Freddie Web driving for Caleb Booth.  Web had trouble off the starting line and didn’t get the boat started in time to get an ET.

Barry Salsman, driving Wildthing, cut a .090 light and ran a 10.051 ET @ 96 MPH against John Anderson’s Ludicrous boat with a 1.013 light and tried to make up time but ran to fast for the class with a 9.900 ET.

Rick Conklin in his new quarter shot, Poppa’s Toy, cut a good .056 light and ran a 10.447 ET @ 112 MPH against Shane Phillips.  Phillips, driving H20 Rocket, had a slower reaction time of .248 but went on to run a 10.227 ET @ 106 MPH to take the win.

Ron Morton, of Indianapolis, IN driving Rampage, ran a 10.054 on a .183 light on a legal single.  Freddie Web’s boat had broken and he couldn’t make the call in his boat.

Brown Hawley, of Paris, TN driving Smilemaker, ran a 9.971 on a .146 light against first time racer, Roger Childers.  Childers had a .302 light and ran a 9.777 ET @ 108 MPH.  Hawley and Childers were both to fast for the class but Brown Hawley was closer to the 10.0 dial in for the class.

Second round for the Modified Eliminator

Shane Stafford in Flat Nasty, ran a 10.063 ET @ 107 MPH on a .833 light to take the win over Dan Roak in Final D Mention.  Roak had a quicker light, .411, but ran a 10.718 ET @ 104 MPH.

Bob Lipton and Kurt Siewert were nose and nose all the way through this run.  Lipton cut a .351 light and ran a 10.076 ET @ 106 MPH against Kurt Siewert’s .354 light and 10.013 ET @ 107.7 MPH.  Siewert moved on to the next round.

Barry Salsman in Wildthing, cut a very close light with a .016 and ran a 10.276 ET to take the win over Shane Phillips’s 1.436 light and 10.552 ET @ 107 MPH.

Ron Morton in Rampage cut a close light too! Morton’s light was .097 with a 10.023 ET @ 111.5 MPH.  Brown Hawley cut a -0.039 red light and ran a 9.956 ET @ 104 MPH on a loosing effort.

Semi Final round for the Modified Eliminator

Kurt Siewert in Dazed and Confused cut a .560 light and ran a 10.033 ET @ 109 MPH on a loosing effort against Shane Stafford’s .339 light and 10.202 ET @ 105 MPH.  This race was won at the light. Stafford got out on Siewert at the light and he tried to catch up but Shane didn’t let him.

Ron Morton and Barry Salsman ran a very close race all the way to the finish line.  Ron Morton cut a .394 light and ran a 10.063 ET @ 110.8 MPH and Barry Salsman cut a .155 light and ran a 10.065 ET @ 98 MPH.  Salsman went on to face Shane Stafford at the finish line and compete for the big money!

All of the final rounds were delayed for a little while do to the wind.  The wind started up and it made it unsafe to race.  After a little while, the final runs were all able to run.

The final run was no different than any of the other runs that Salsman and Stafford had run all day long.  Each race was very close at the start and at the finish line.

Barry Salsman of Buffalo, KY cut a .123 light and ran a 10.023 ET @ 100 MPH to take the win over Shane Stafford’s .268 light and 10.004 ET @ 109.8 MPH.

Barry Salsman took home his biggest win ever!!! $ 2560.00.

Shane Stafford took home $ 640.00 for second place in the Modified Eliminator class.

We tried the second chance bracket at this race with the first round losers in the Modified Eliminator class.  There were five racers that paid $ 20 to get in this bracket to win 80/20 of the pot, which was $ 100.  Rick Conklin and John Anderson were the first two out.  They both ran to fast for their 10.0 index.  Conklin ran a 9.972 on a .334 light against Anderson ’s 9.955 ET on a .512 light.

The next two were Wade Wallace with a .60 light and a 10.420 ET  and Roger Childers with a .134 light on a 10.717 ET.  Roger Childers drilled Wade Wallace at the light and took the win.

Freddie Web driving Caleb Booth’s boat was the other racer that was going to run in the second chance race.  Caleb Booth’s boat had some problems and Freddie wasn’t able to run again.

Rick Conklin cut a .386 light and ran a 9.991 ET to give the win to Roger Childers.  Childers cut a .113 light and ran a 10.135 ET.  Rick Conklin said that was the best $20 he had ever spent.  He has a new boat and he enjoyed practicing on the light.
